Keeping Hannah Waiting - Reading Group Guide

The Holocaust was a unique experience in the history of mankind. Its meaning and its legend will be studied for centuries. Here are some questions to begin your discussion of the Holocaust:

1) What would you tell your children about the Holocaust if you were a survivor?

2) What do you think it feels like to lose everything in your life, especially your family? How do you go on after such devastation?

3) How would you rationalize why you survived the Holocaust while others did not?

4) Survivors often look for meaning in the Holocaust itself, asking why such a thing had to happen, and looking for something good to come of it. What do you think that might be?

5) If you lived in Europe during the war, do you think you would give in to peer pressure and go along with the deliberate extermination of innocent people to get along with your neighbors or obey the laws that mandate you do so?

6) Do you think there could be another Holocaust to persecute any group, and why or why not?

7) If you were a survivor, how would you honor the dead?

8) After the war, governments set up quotas to only accept a certain number of survivors in each country. Was this a fair thing to do? If not, how would you have dealt with the displaced persons after the war?
